Kitten Limb Amputation: A Clinical Case
Case Summary
This clinical case documents the postoperative care of a kitten that required limb amputation after its limb was tightly constricted by a rope for approximately 36 hours.
Following surgery, adjunctive veterinary laser therapy was incorporated into the postoperative care plan. The kitten received five consecutive daily laser therapy sessions, followed by two days at home. It then returned to the clinic for suture removal and one additional laser treatment.
Serial photographs document the surgical site from immediately after surgery through the initial treatment course and the follow-up visit. This case provides a practical example of incorporating veterinary laser therapy into postoperative care following traumatic limb injury and amputation.
Case Overview
Species: Cat (Kitten)
Injury: Prolonged limb constriction caused by a rope
Duration of constriction: Approximately 36 hours
Surgical procedure: Limb amputation
Adjunctive treatment: Veterinary laser therapy
The kitten sustained a severe limb injury after becoming entangled in a rope for approximately 1.5 days. Due to the severity of the injury, surgical amputation was required.
Following surgery, laser therapy was introduced as an adjunct to routine postoperative care, with treatment directed at the surgical incision and surrounding tissue.
Initial Postoperative Assessment
The initial photograph was taken immediately after the amputation procedure.
A long surgical incision closed with multiple sutures was visible at the surgical site. The incision and surrounding tissue were monitored throughout the early postoperative period.
The treatment plan incorporated laser therapy as part of the kitten's postoperative care.
Laser Therapy Protocol
The following parameters were used for each laser therapy session:
Parameter |
Setting |
| Power | 1.6 W |
| Average Power | 0.8 W |
| Mode | Pulsed |
| Total Energy | 163.2 J |
| Treatment Time | 3 min 24 sec |
| Frequency | Once daily |
| Initial Treatment Course | 5 consecutive sessions |
| Additional Treatment | 1 session at the suture-removal visit |
Laser therapy was applied to the surgical incision and surrounding tissue according to the treatment plan documented by the clinic.
Protocol Note: These settings represent the parameters used in each session in this individual case, not a universal prescription. Laser parameters should be selected according to the patient's condition, treatment area, device specifications, and clinical objectives.
Treatment Progress
Immediately After Surgery
The surgical incision was closed with multiple sutures. Discoloration and postoperative tissue changes were visible around the surgical site.

After the 1st Session
The incision remained closed, with sutures intact. Discoloration was still visible around the surgical site.

After the 2nd Session
The incision remained approximated, with pink areas visible around the wound. Some localized crusting was present along the incision.

After the 5th Session
The surgical incision remained closed with sutures in place. Pink areas were visible around the incision, alongside some residual discoloration and crusting.

At the Suture-Removal Visit
After two days at home, the kitten returned to the clinic for suture removal and one additional laser therapy session. Some sutures remained visible in the photograph, and the incision margins appeared largely approximated.

Clinical Observation Summary
The kitten received five consecutive daily laser therapy sessions, followed by one additional session at the suture-removal visit.
Overall observations:
The surgical incision remained approximated in the documented photographs.
Pink areas became visible around the incision during follow-up.
Some discoloration and localized crusting remained visible.
At the final documented visit, some sutures were still visible in the photograph.
This case is also featured in our YouTube Shorts video, offering a visual look at the kitten's postoperative care and laser therapy treatment.
Clinical Interpretation
Serial photographs documented the appearance of the surgical incision throughout the postoperative period. Laser therapy was incorporated as an adjunct to routine postoperative care. The observed changes should be considered in the context of normal wound healing and other postoperative management measures. This individual case does not establish that laser therapy alone caused the observed changes.
Clinical Takeaway
This case illustrates the use of veterinary laser therapy as an adjunct to postoperative care following traumatic limb amputation in a kitten. The documented treatment parameters and serial photographs provide a practical clinical reference for veterinary professionals.
Clinical Documentation: Case details, treatment parameters, and serial photographs were obtained from the clinic's records.
